Environment protection

  • Consistency with policies of reducing, reusing, recycling and enhancement of the residual fraction of waste: the system will create a sustainable system for the disposal of the undifferentiated (industrial waste), alternative to landfills;
  • Reduction (-90%) of the residue to be disposed in landfills, as compared to traditional gasification, incineration etc;
  • Significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as compared to other solutions of traditional disposal. CO2 equivalent net negative;
  • Limited impact on traffic (trucks) in line with the industrial nature of the area (25 trucks per day on weekdays only). Higher mileage avoided compared to transport waste for disposal outside the province;
  • No air pollutants, vibrations or electromagnetic fields. No odour impact thanks to negative pressure of the sheds and treatment of exhaust air;
  • No impact on groundwater. Use of water resources and minimum waste water before returning to the sewer system, so as to generate a stream far less polluting than a normal domestic sewage;
  • Reduced impact on the landscape, in line with the industrial nature of the area.

Emissions

The Gasplasma® plant has no flue gas stacks or chimneys, being based on a hermetically sealed process. The only significant emissions from the plant into the atmosphere will be those from converting the syngas into electricity:

Throughout the installation the syngas will be treated to achieve the degree of purity acceptable for fuel cells;

In the first operational phase Syngas will be transformed into electricity through gas engine cogeneration. The emission levels in this configuration will be highlighted in the study of dispersion currently in progress;

In the second phase, gas engines will be gradually replaced by “fuel cells” systems. In this configuration along with the substantial increase of the conversion efficiency there will be a reduction of NOx emissions.

The proposed project is estimated to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of the City of Mori by 30%.

The benefits for the territory

Employment:

  • 35-40 permanent qualified (know-how);
  • 200-250 temporary jobs, for the period of construction of the plant (24 months);
  • indirect employment, than creating an induced.

Economic Development:

  • attraction of foreign capital for the design and construction of the plant (80 million €);
  • returns on local companies that will be involved in the preliminary works and operational support system (2,5 – 3,5 € million);
  • savings from the cost of waste disposal for the business entities in Trentino (-15% per annum).

Internationalization:

  • establishment in Trentino of a worldwide competence strategy center for the development of SOFC / Gasplasma® technologies;
  • consolidation of a center of Trentino companies, capable to market a high-tech solution around the world;
  • prospects: Trentino will become the first territory to implement a new model of waste management, based on recycling, research and green field development .
